These questions help determine where both new and returning teachers are needed throughout the building. We have seen strong principals make the sometimes difficult decision to reassign a teacher to a different grade level or subject area when the teacher's skills were needed there. (See the section on staff assignment in this chapter for more on this topic.)
Once you identify your school's needs, you can consider the criteria you will use to both recruit for and fill job openings. Even if your district has fixed hiring criteria and personnel policies, you can influence the process by recommending more stringent or detailed criteria that will help you find the best match for your school.
Once the principals in our study identified the gaps in their staff, they used some general criteria to find teachers who not only had the core pedagogical skills and content knowledge they were looking for, but also had characteristics that would help the school fulfill its mission:
Shows a genuine connection to and interest in students
Deeply committed to the belief that every student is capable of academic success
Focused on improving student achievement, with a strong sense of responsibility to do so
Interested in continuously learning and improving their own work
Capable of working in teams
Has leadership potential5
